The Environment Council of Andalusia, Spain in collaboration with the University of Cordova, has killed or eradicated all of the Carp in the Lagoon of Zóñar.
The Lagoon (right) is located to the south of Aguilar, Andalucia Spain. It is a natural lagoon which covers an area of approximately 70 hectares with a depth of 16 meters, the lagoon is fed by an underground spring and is unusual in that it is surrounded by a comparatively arid landscape.

The lagoon is an important breeding and migratory stop over for many water-fowl, in particular the white-headed duck
The controlling and killing was part of an Andalusian plan to control invading /exotic species, a chemical called «Icitocida», was used to kill the fish. I believe this chemical translates to the fish poison Antimycin in English. The decision to eradicate the Carp from these waters was taken after studying the effects that this introduced species has on the ecosystem of the zone.
The survey classified the Carp as being specially harmful due to it’s high capacity of adaptation (and therefore of reproduction), and stated that the Carp could cause serious damages to the aquatic birds and ducks that live in this protected zone.
The focus of the danger is apparently within the realm of Carp being herbivores, which means that they eat and pose a threat to subaquatic and submerged flora which are also eaten by birds.
