Seagulls Carp and Ruins!!!

I met a Carp Angler last week on a favorite water – St Martine De La Vega. We talked the usual, then we decided to go fishing at the weekend, so back to Buendia we ran!

On arrival we did as done, took note of wind, scanned the pegs near the old ruins – (see picture); finally at about 9.30pm we chose a spot to fish!

I was in two minds about the spot, but some seagull’s helped me make my final decision. I do believe that on some waters, especially in winter you will find a direct connection between Birdlife and Fish, although it’s not winter I wanted to test the theory. Way to our right in the distance, we could see some Carp fishermen. Curiosity got the best of us and since I could see fish jumping over that way we decided to go and ask how things were going. On arrival we found some people who I have come across before on San Martine, small world!

They had fished the previous night and between them (4 people – 8 rods) they had banked 15 fish, the biggest of which they claimed to be a 15kg fish 30+lbs. So clearly it sounded like they were doing well!

The spot they were fishing I have never seen empty, it’s always full of fishermen which suggests it’s a hot-spot, perhaps about to be over-fished, but nevertheless a current hot-spot. I wonder if Andy Chambers discovered this spot.

I believe Andy Chambers made a recent fish trip to this water, I would love to have a chat with him about his findings. It wouldn’t surprise me if the spot was sourced by Andy, but either way, the boys on the corner continued to receive action through the night as did we!

A domingero (Sunday fisherman), was on our spot, but we knew he would be off any mo, he had fished the peg all day, no action. We new at best he would have put in a hand-full of corn, so the swim was not exactly loaded with bait i.e pre-baited.
Domingero’s in Spain are like Sunday drivers, except Sunday fishers, they come out to the countryside, eat food cast a rod or two in, and chance their arm.

When our Sunday man was off, we lanced our Concept for you Boilies at our marker float (60yards), in 4.5m of water, we added about 2kg of beans, loopins, hemp, betaine pellet, and ground bait, and began.

Things were slow at first but within a few hours were having line bites and takes, with Angel my new fishing mate having the first proper run. His screamer sadly dropped off, but it was s a good sign; once the fish start they are generally on it!

Feeding continued and finally I managed to take 4 Carp and 1 Barbel, my best fish was a scraper just a snip over 20lbs (top photo). Angel sadly had many run’s but just couldnt seem to get a fish on the bank!

It wasn’t a bad session for me, but I know I could have fished better, 5 fish in a night, at this time of year, with extream heat with a 20+ fish! I reckon the Seagull’s did us well!

This month I have managed just 24 Carp. This weekend I will make another 1 night session, so let’s see what I can add to that count. The last two weeks I have seen two 20plus Carp, one 23+ the other 20+, I am sure I can add some more 20+ Carp to the tally this weekend. Make sure you come back next week to see how things went.

Tight lines.
